Record-tying heat expected today

Jennifer Edwards Baker reports:

Record-tying heat will blaze across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky today.

The high temperature is expected to soar to a balmy 81 degrees by 5 p.m., nearly 20 degrees above normal for this time of year, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. It will be mostly sunny.

The last time it was this warm this late in October was 1920, said meteorologist Mike Gallagher.

It’s already a mild 62 degrees this morning at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

The overnight low will fall to 55 degrees.

More near-record heat will hit Thursday with a high of 80, just two degrees above the 1963 record for Oct. 25.

High pressure pullling warm air up from the south is to blame for the heat wave, Gallagher explained.

And like all good Cincinnati weather, it won’t last.

A major change in the forecast is ahead this weekend as a cold front approaches from the northwest.

Friday will look dramatically different with showers and thunderstorms and a high only reaching 66 degrees.

More rain is expected Friday night with a low around 42.

The mercury will struggle to reach the 50s Saturday and Sunday. More rain could fall Saturday, but the sun should re-emerge by Sunday.

Overnight lows will be downright chilly and in the mid-30s.

The colder weather will stick around through Tuesday of next week.
